While Mentally You Might Be Ready For The Changing Season Ahead, Is Your Wardrobe Ready Too? If Not, It’s Time To Set Aside Time To Learn How To Declutter Your Clothes Once And For All.

Here are six steps to declutter your wardrobe for the changing season ahead.

1. Make an appointment to declutter your wardrobe

It might sound basic, but grab your diary and set aside a time to declutter your wardrobe. Make a date with yourself as you would for an appointment to have your hair done.

Pop a solid two hours in your calendar to dedicate to decluttering clothes and commit to it. Without that, you’ll procrastinate or only get the job partially done.

2. Let go of what you don’t love, wear or want

Start by purging. Look through your closet right now and take out anything you haven’t worn this season. If you haven’t worn it over the last few months, there’s very little chance you’ll wear it anytime soon.

Tips for how to declutter clothes:

  • Start at the back of your closet and discard any items that have been pushed far back.
  • Throw out any hangers or clothes with dust on them.
  • Say goodbye to any items that still have tags on them.
  • Be ruthless. If you haven’t worn a pair of pants, let them go – and don’t look back

3. Arrange like items together

Once you’ve gone through your wardrobe decluttering clothes that have been unworn or unused, organise what you have decided to keep into like items. Put all of the blouses together, all of the pants, all of the jumpers, etc.

Now, do one more pass asking yourself if it’s really necessary to keep multiple similar items. Do you really need to hold onto six pairs of black pants or 15 white t-shirts? By organising like things together you can easily see what duplicates you have – and don’t need.

4. Move winter wear to open up more space

Clean, fold and store the items you definitely won’t wear until next season. Bulky jumpers, oversized scarves and heavy woollen pants are all obvious targets. Once those items have been cleaned, put them in airtight storage containers (so no little pests get in) and store in a secondary space (if possible) to totally declutter your wardrobe.

If you don’t have any extra storage space in your home, think about storage under your bed or as far back or as high up in the wardrobe as possible. This will free up precious, usable space for the clothes that you need to access every day.

5. Decide if items are ready for the new season

Now, where’d you put the swimming costumes, dresses and shorts? Pull those out and do a serious sort again.

Group like items together, then go through each category and make sure you still love the look of each item and that it still fits. If it passes both tests, then decide how often you will be wearing that category. If it’s a regular everyday kind of thing, those items should go somewhere as close to eye-level as possible. Things you’ll wear only occasionally can be put in a higher-up or further-back position.

6. Donate decluttered clothing today

Box up everything that’s going to your favourite charity and get it out of your house immediately. Don’t let those items hang around. It can be hard to say goodbye… but deep down you know it’s the right thing to do.

Learning how to declutter your wardrobe might seem like a painful task at first, but trust me, your closet will (quietly) thank you for it.

A decluttered wardrobe encourages a calmer, happier state of mind – as do plants in the bedroom.
